You've probably heard of the "shamanic journey" and as much as I want to deter folks away from settling on this label (because it can be problematic) it really is a practice pulled from contemporary Western shamanism. I'd like you to know that western shamanism is
I have a different view and practice of what journeying is to me vs. what shamanic journeying is. I often see people find some comfort when we can label or categorize things for our own understanding, but I am not a shamanic practitioner, nor have I been trained in what we see these days as western shamanism. My work stems from the expressive and experiential arts and as a trained practitioner a big portion of my work is about assisting others to enter safely and comfortably into the imaginal realms, sometimes known as non-ordinary reality. It may look very "shamanic," but I think that's because it is the common base of our societal and conditioned frame of thought nowadays. I deeply respect the indigenous medicine people and find it heartbreaking when their ways of healing and living are being exploited.
